About
Rhonda Masotti is the craftsperson behind Jelly Pot Studio.
Based in Unama’ki, Land of the Fog, Jelly Pot Studio is the name for my creative practice. With a focus on materiality, organic shapes, and textures, I’m intentional about rooting my work in place. This includes prioritizing stewardship of the land, and as such I am exploring the use of local wild clay, minerals, fibres and processes that allow my practice to have a lighter footprint on this earth.
The name Jelly Pot Studio comes from a childhood schoolyard game in which we would tap our boots and jump on the earth to reveal a bouncy, soft ‘pot’ of clay-rich mud. My interest in clay continued in the summer months, when we would dig clay with our hands from a nearby lakebed to make lumpy sculptures that would dry in the sun. Much of my creative process is a return to those childhood joys and experiments.
My approach to work is influenced by the values and politics of the Arts and Crafts movement and teachings of reciprocity by people like Robin Wall Kimmerer. Social and economic justice and human rights, particularly those related to food and labour, underpin my artistic and business ethics.
